I’ll admit that I didn’t come to Yeti as a new fan who just heard the music and had no idea who either John Hassell or The Libertines were; so like most listeners, my opinion may be somewhat coloured by my love of The Libertines.

The Legend Of Yeti Gonzales is the band’s first album proper discounting previously released demos, singles, EPs and Japan-exclusives and as such a lot of the material has been heard before on other releases and just re-recorded for this 2008 album.

As an album however, Legend’ is a strong effort that flows well from beginning to end and is sure to appease any fan who likes the band already, even if the material is familiar. The music has a positive and fun feeling, with a clear Beatles Influence and a sort of low-fi retro production style.

Highlights include the absolutely fantastic single ‘Never Lose Your Sense Of Wonder,’ which is the type of track that you can listen to over and over again without ever getting sick of, as well as the slow and menacing ‘Midnight Flight,’ and ‘Sister Sister,’ which every serious Libertines fan will know already.

Not all the material however has been made available earlier so don’t feel that the album is an inconsequential release just because you have been a fan for a while now and if you haven’t been following the band since the demos stage then there is a wealth of exciting new material to enjoy on this record.

Overall, The Legend Of Yeti Gonzales is definitely something that you should get a hold of it you like Yeti and certainly something that you should try at least once if you like summery sounding 60s inspired records or the more whimsical and fun side of John’s previous band The Libertines, it is a very pleasant and enjoyable record indeed.
